Rudy Ready for 2015 Liverpool City Cup Return

February 24th, 2015

Talented Queenslander Rudy undoubtedly found career-best form over his most recent preparation through spring and summer, and has been confirmed to begin his 2015 Doncaster Mile campaign in Saturday’s Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Warwick Farm.

Securing an impressive race record of seven wins and a further four minor place finishes over his eighteen start career so far, Rudy has not been seen at the races since charging home to secure ballot-free entry to the Doncaster Mile in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 13th.

Conceding he is arguably at his prime when contesting events over a mile, trainer Helen Page is thrilled with the form and class displayed by her stable’s star in his return to work and is confident of a competitive first-up performance in the 2015 Liverpool City Cup.

“Rudy has done well,” Page said.

“He had a let-up, but he is back in work and had a little jump out the other day.

“He is on his way towards the Doncaster and if he is good enough he is there.

“The Doncaster is a different kettle of fish to the Villiers, but he has a run in it by winning the Villiers and we now need to get him fit and ready for it.

“He is the sort of horse that takes a couple of months to come right and his best distances are probably a mile or more, but he has won over these shorter distances but not at this level.

“I have him trained ready for the short sprint, but I feel that the class of the others may be a little bit brilliant for him over the shorter course.

“He will run well.”

A standout performer over the entire 2014 racing calendar, Rudy claimed back-to-back victories in minor Brisbane sprints first-up before running third in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) on April 26th.

Placing a credible fifth in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) on May 10th, the Red Dazzler gelding ran on for an impressive third in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) on May 24th before failing to get the distance in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on June 7th.

Running second in two Brisbane sprints and taking out the Listed Recognition Stakes (1630m) leading into his Villiers Stakes triumph, Rudy is set to be confirmed in the 2015 Liverpool City Cup final field and barrier draw on Wednesday.
